ON JULIO SANCHEZ

If you don't know who that is, then this post probably isn't for you. For the rest of you - Major Crimes fans one and all - I must confess: I'm worried. The beauty of "The Closer/Major Crimes" (perhaps I should say one of the beauties) is the rich and continual development of the characters, and none of them are more dramatically portrayed than Detective Julio Sanchez played by Raymond Cruz. I've always loved to see Julio go medieval on some hapless perp. The creep who beat Amy Sykes and the crazed serial killer he pulled from the cab of a semi come to mind. But lately, Julio seems to be coming undone.

I think it started with the episode

(SPOILER ALERT)

in which two small children were asphyxiated by their uncle in the trunk of a car. Julio had to be physically restrained... more than once. And that's not the last time it's happened (just last night he was ready to explode). I've had the feeling for a while now that he was headed for a break-down, and (I don't think this constitutes a spoiler) after seeing the previews of next week's episode, it seems I might be right. I hope not. Perhaps it was just a tease. Cruz is a magnificent actor, and I hope Julio will be giving the bad guys grief for many seasons to come.
