The Garner case cries out for justice, but justice will never, ever be achieved through vengeance. That only leads to more tragedy such as the senseless slaughter of two totally innocent, decent family men. I grieve for them and their families as well as Mr. Garner and his.
As an afterthought, I wish the NYPD as an organization had shown more sensitivity to Garner's death. Similarly, I wish the protesters had heeded the mayor's wish and refrained from further demonstrations until after Officers Liu and Ramos were laid to rest. It was a tasteless, classless act not to do so.
We all need to take a deep breath and stand down.
